Etymology of my Nickname (Alexo)
Nov. 20th, 2010 01:56 pmMy nickname Alexo was originally a modification of some company's name “Alex Soft.” When I was a kid, I appended few more characters, and it resulted in Alexo Softman. The pseudo family name wasn't needed, so I mostly used only the first one. Few years later, when I started learning Greek, I found that the word “αλἐξω” with the same pronunciation used to stand for a verb "to defend” or “I defend.”

Etymologically, the name is derived from the Greek "Αλέξανδρος" (Aléxandros), meaning "defending men" or "protector of men", a compound of the verb "ἀλέξω" (alexō), "to ward off, to avert, to defend" and the noun "ἀνδρός" (andros), genitive of "ἀνήρ" (anēr), "man".
